How do I set the rear shock SAG?

SAG is measured from the rear axle to the SAG mark on the rear fender, on level ground, with the rider sitting in the middle. Three positions:

  • A — unloaded, rear wheel off the ground
  • B — bike on its wheels under its own weight
  • C — rider in full gear on the bike

Targets

  • A − B (static sag) = 40–45 mm
  • A − C (race sag) = 102–108 mm

These are the old MX manual values. In the EX and MX 1.2 manuals: A − B = 40 ± 3 mm, A − C = 110 ± 3 mm.

Race sag is set with spring preload: loosen the lock ring and turn the spring itself by hand. If it's tight, lift the wheel or spray some WD-40.

If static sag isn't 40–45 mm with correct race sag, the spring doesn't match your weight.
